The Monroe area was inhabited for thousands of years before the first Europeans arrived. The area around Monroe was first settled by the Klemtu people, who were ancestors of the Spokane people. A trading post and fort was built in the 18th century by Chief Josephs and it is believed that this fort may have been used as a base of operations for exploring and trading with new tribes. In 1855, General Scott established Fort Lewis near what is now Monroe. The fort served as a military garrison until 1865 when it was closed due to its low morale. In 1889, President Grover Cleveland ordered the construction of a new branch line from Tacoma to Portland. This line was called the Cascades Route and ran through Monroe along contemporary U Street and Park Avenue. The old fort at what is now Monroe became known as Fort Lewis Museum after the line was completed. During World War II, many industries were located in Monroe including war munitions production, shipbuilding, aluminum production, refrigeration manufacturing and other industrial interests. After the war ended, many companies relocated their factories to other parts of Washington or Oregon but some continued to operate in Monroe until they went out of business or were acquired by larger rivals. In recent decades, more hotels have opened up in town while restaurants have mushroomed since monroe's last major grocery store closed down in 2006. The population has increased slowly over time despite an annual median household income below average for all Pierce County townships studied (2015). At first they only lived there temporarily while they built their new government at Mount Vernon on the Potomac River bank near present-day Arlington Cemetery. In 1789, they permanently moved into the presidential palace here, complete with its own private garden, library, and museum complex (the National Museum of American History). Monroe quickly became a center for business and politics during the 18th century as many Founding Fathers settled here from across North America to achieve greater visibility and power within their newly formed republic. The area around Monroe developed rapidly as an agricultural hub with vast fields including today's Alexandria neighborhood being established along West Virginia Avenue between 18th Street NW and 19th Street NW just east of Pennsylvania Avenue NW on what was then rural land now part of Georgetown University's campus—a site which would become one of America's most prestigious addresses later in history when Presidents George Washingtons death warrant was delivered here from his Presidential Mansion on Pennsylvania Avenue NW after he had been impeached by Congress! During the War for Independence (1775-1783), GeneralWashington left Mount Vernon to campaign against British forces under ColonelJohn Forbes at Fort Necessity on October 14, 1775; he arrived back at Mount Vernon two days later but all his belongings were stolen! This story has been interpreted as evidence that PresidentGeorge Washington didn't really leave Mt Vernon until AFTER his successful campaign because if he had stayed put, he would have likely been captured or killed by British forces waiting for him at Fort Necessity! In addition to military action outside our borders, everyday lifeenthaler experienced mass hysteria due to events such as Indian Attacks or firefights taking place throughout Maryland & Virginia occurring nightly without warning resulting in injuries or fatalities….Families could neither leave their homes nor send children off school without wearing masks while windows panes rattled with fear…..At 4pm every evening local time fearful residents heard loud screams coming from nearby woods preceded by a brief light show choreographed by Native Americans who seemed “to welcome us”…..As night fell more screams could be heard coming from different parts of town followed shortly thereafter by thunder which signaled an attack………One resident described hearing “a tumult like ten thousand elephantsEH [enormous] crashing together” shortly before dawn when she finally woke up her little girl who told her mom horror stories about how she saw people die during those terrible hours!: All these activities must have taken place within very close proximity indeed!. Today few things can compare with daily life experience faced by Virginians living through those times: A family cannot leave their house without getting outfitted with a mask; windowpanes rattle nervously whenever there is an intruder sighted; fear always pervades even before big events take place – especially Indian attacks where families live next door warned all day long about possible disaster before ever seeing or experiencing it.; Loud screaming can be heard coming from nearby woods leading up to what seems like an attack…..When darkness falls you can usually hear thunder signaling an impending attack……All these activities took place right next door right inside our homes!!!!! Today we cannot imagine how difficult it must have been living through those days!!!
