He sighted what he thought were two tall mountains and named them Monticello and Mount Vernon after his home country of Spain. The first permanent settler in Monroe was David Thompson in 1804. In 1820, John Capps bought 2,000 acres (810 ha) near present-day Monroe for $8 per acre ($2 million today). In 1824Alexander Hamilton donated land to the town for use as a school district. After several years of construction and opening in 1830, the first high school in Washington County opened its doors to students from all over rural Washington County. In 1831 Congress appropriated $1,500 for an academy to be built east of present-day Monroe for female students only; this became Jefferson Academy later renamed girls' grammar School & High School when it merged with Grades 9-12 into Clark Community College District No. 1.)
