The Mill Creek watershed is located in the eastern part of Washington and extends about 265 miles. The creek is a small and fast stream that flows through rolling hills and past stretches of forest. The watershed also includes parts of the states of Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. Mill Creek was named for John Mill, a fur trader who lived in what is now Spokane County during the 18th century. In 1792, when mill owner Nicholas Flournoy donated land to create the millrace around Mill Creek, he named it after his friend and mentor, John Isaac Mills. The first mills on the creek were built in the early 1800s by farmers who used water from nearby Lake George to power their mills. By 1830, there were at least six mills operating on Mill Creek. Over time, other industry took hold in this rural area and mills stopped production except for a few specialty items such as flour for baking bread or cheese. In recent years, however,mill activity has resumed on Mill Creek due to its strategic location within close proximity to major urban areas in Western Washington and its ability to generate jobs for local residents. This resurgence has led to increased pollution near some of the oldest mill buildings as well as concerns about potential negative effects on salmon populations downstream from these operations. However, activist groups have fought back against these detrimental effects by working together to promote environmental awareness among locals and advocating for more environmentally responsible practices at these businesses.

The creek's name comes from the mill built on its course by Nicholas Mills in 1887. The first permanent European settlers in what is now King County were those who arrived along the Columbia River during the early 19th century. They were followed by other groups over the next several decades as land was taken up for settlement. In 1851, Nicholas Mills founded what is now known asNicholas Mills State Park on his own piece of land at present day milepost 20 on Mill Creek. At that time it was one of only a few state parks in Washington. The mill started production around 1850 and continued to do so until it closed in 1971 due to economic reasons. The mill site still contains remnants of the mill buildings which have been preserved and are open to visitors today. The area that includes present day King County was part of Yakima Indian Nation before white settlement began there in 1792. When gold was found near Yakima Falls in 1848, some people decided to move into this area because it had potential for gold mining. The first white settler at what is now King County arrived between 1853 and 1854 when James Wirtz moved from Oregon Territory into what is now King County after finding gold near Siuslaw Pass.. 4 more years passed before any other Europeans settled permanently in this area; these were mostly fur traders looking for new markets for their products rather than farmers looking for land to settle down on with crops and livestock
The Mill Creek Massacre took place on October 3, 1855, when 50 Native Americans were killed by a group of white men led by Chief Seattle. The massacre is considered one of the deadliest incidents in Washington history.
