Mill Creek is a small stream located in the Wenatchee Valley, about 12 miles south of Seattle and 9 miles east of Wenatchee. It emerges from the slopes of Mount Rainier at an elevation of 6,643 feet above sea level. The creek flows for about 8 miles through agricultural lands and forest before emptying into Lake Washington. The first permanent settlers in the area were Native Americans who hunted game along Mill Creek. In 1821, surveyors noted that the creek flowed through what is now the town of Wenatchee. The first white man to arrive in this area was John Waddell, who surveyed part of present-day Wenatchee Valley in 1827. He named his new land "Mill Creek," after a mill he saw on the Mill River near modern day Yakima. The first post office was established at Mill Creek in 1838, and it remained operational until 1959. The town of Wenatchee was platted around this time, and mills began to operate in the community as well. By 1870, many people had moved to these towns because of improvements made to Highway 99 by President Ulysses S Grant during his presidency; these include a road built over Mill Creek carrying goods up to Seattle from warehouses on Elliott Bayfront. By 1900, much of what is now downtown Wenatchee had been developed; however, most mills continued operating until they closed during World War II due to wartime production shortages. One mill that did not close was Pioneer Paper Company; it continued operations until 1984 when it merged with Allied Paper Corporation (later known as Dow Corning). Although few mills remain open today, Mill Creek has been designated as one of America's "National Streams."
