The Mill Creek Gun Target is a unique and popular target shooting location in the town of Mill Creek, Washington. The location was originally built by the mill owners as a hunting ground for their animals. The gun target has been regularly used by shooters from all over the country since it was erected in 1892. It is one of the oldest targets still in use in Mill Creek. The gun target is made out of heavy wood, with a metal frame that stands about 12 feet tall. The target has a diameter of about 24 inches, and is filled with lead shot pellets that are about 2 inches in diameter. Shooting at the gun target requires accuracy and good timing to produce consistent results. The Mill Creek drainage basin is located in the Kittitas County of Washington, just east of the town of Apple Valley. This area was first settled by European Americans in the late 18th century and became part of the Kittitas County land grant system on January 3, 1792. The millrace that now forms Mill Creek was first surveyed in 1798 and named for John Milford (1741-1802), a settler who had worked as an agent for John Day and other investors in what is now King County. The millrace ran north-south between present day Apple Valley and White Salmon before turning west to reach Mill Creek. The first mills on the creek were built about 1800 by Nicholas Gibbs and others from Georgia. By 1810, however, mills had been built on both sides of Mill Creek at present day White Salmon and Apple Valley, making it one of the largest rivers in Washington state with over 20 mills operating along its course at various points during its history. The early mills were destroyed by fire in 1836 but were rebuilt within a few years. In 1861, when Washinton became a state under Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, Mill Creek became one of the earliest recipients of federal funds to help rebuild Reconstruction Era economies following America's civil War. In 1865, during the Freeport Rebellion against Microsoft co-founder Charles Whitman, mill workers refused to turn over their tools to Union forces during a forced march through town; this event is considered one of the most significant rebellions against white supremacy in Washington State during that era. Mill Creek declined thereafter due to several factors including increased development around it; lack of replacement water resources; competition from more important waterways such asthe Columbia River; and changes wrought by climate change which made it harder for waterpower plants to operate year-round. However, some initiatives have been attempted to revive or improveMill Creek including plans for a bypass road connecting White Sulphur Springs with Kittitas County via Interstate 5; redevelopment proposals for downtown Apple Valley which would include office space, housing units and retail acres; and restoration efforts involving restoring dam structures upstream from White Salmon as well as upgrades to infrastructure like levees that protect communities downstream from flooding caused by raging creeks like Mill Creek
The Mill Creek area in Washington, D.C., is home to a number of historical buildings and sites that have been associated with the agricultural industry. One of the most notable structures located in this area is the Mill Creek Bridge, which was built in 1875 and has been used as a transportation link between Washington and Frederick County.
