Mercer Island is a small town in King County, Washington, located on theSound of the Sea. The population was 9,883 at the 2010 census and was estimated to be 10,878 in 2016. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The first flashlight made in Mercer Island was an Edison electric arc light that used six C-type batteries. In 1934, two brothers who ran a hardware store in nearby Issaquah started selling flashlights under the name "The Flashlight Company". The company grew rapidly and by 1938 had produced over 1,000 torches and flashlights. In 1940 they introduced a new type of flashlight called a "torch" which could be operated with one hand as well as with both hands when held overhead like a hand fan. In 1950 Bob Tingey developed an automatic safety device for his Torch that would prevent it from going off if it were mishandled or dropped; this became known as the Tingey Clip. By 1951 allflashlights were being manufactured using either nickel or silver wires wound around lead acid cells to create sparks instead of flames (the spark luminosity then depended on how much current was flowing through each wire). In 1954 Ted Dyson founded Dyson Lighthouse Equipment Corporation (DLEC) which imported surplus American incandescent lights into Europe for use in lighthouse keepers' lanterns and other earthen lighting facilities. DLEC soon became world leading in production of automatic keyless turnignering flashlights based on designs patented by John Jolyon Wimborne and others including David Ellis's Wimborne/Ellis design for pocket flashers which became known as "Dyson Bulbs" after DLEC president David Ellis himself!
