By 1961, much of downtown had been replaced with high-rise buildings designed by renowned architect Eero Saarinen; however, development stopped short at what is now known as "The Humps" due to opposition from local preservationists concerned about potential destruction of valuable maritime heritage associated with Mercer Islanders past
