Mercer Island, Washington is a small town in the Puget Sound region of Washington. It was founded by Capt. George Mercer and his family in 1853 as a trading post on the Seattle-Tacoma Railroad. The post office was moved to its current location in 1875 and the first school was built there in 1865. The town became an agricultural center after the completion of the Central Pacific Railroad in 1886. In 1907, it merged with nearby Issaquah to form Mercer Island-Issaquah City. During World War II, the city served as a naval airbase for Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. After the war, the town declined and its population decreased until it reached its present low level in 1990.

Mercer Island is a small island in the Puget Sound region of Washington, located about 12 miles east-northeast of Seattle. The island is home to the Mercer Island Naval Air Station and two other naval air stations, Anacortes and Whidbey Island. Mercer Island was first settled by the Chilkat tribe in the late 18th century. The Chilkat were removed from the island by American forces in 1846 during the Mexican–American War. The first permanent settler on Mercer Island was Samuel Merrill, who arrived in 1792. Merrill was a captain in the United States Navy and played an important role in development of American seacoast defenses against British attacks during the War of 1812. In 1836, Nicholas Apostolakis purchased land on Mercer Island from John Denny for $5,000. After building himself a cabin there, Apostolakis became one of early members of what would become known as Seattle's Greek community. In 1870, David Brewster sold land at Islay to Augustus Saint Paul for $10 per acre (worth about $2 million today). Saint Paul built his estate around what is now Pioneer Square and developed it into an Importantal District commercial center which he called "South Point". Saint Paul also donated land to Howard University for use as a campus site and named one endowment fund after him (the South Endowment Fund). In 1886, Congress passed an act authorizing creation of a new U.S.-Mexico border station on Orcas Island off Tacoma Bay near present day Olympia; this station would be known as Moses Lake National Wildlife Refuge. On February 14, 1889, Pope Coleman took possession of Islay from Stedman Grahams mineral interests following purchase by Coleman from Grahams' widow Augusta Pollock for $3 million (the value then was about $7 million today). Despite these efforts by private individuals and federal officials to develop Mercer Island as a landing or base camp for military operations along Puget Sound's boundary with Mexico City proper during both world wars I and II – no such effort resulted until 1942 when Admiral Chester Nimitz decided that Eniwetok Atoll could serve as his Northwest Pacific Fleet's primary anchorage – initial development only took place within Admiralty Islands sector including Islay itself where some 25-30 buildings had been erected since 1925 including: Lighthouse Service Station No 1; Engine House No 2; Officers' Quarters Dock 7; Coast Guard Annex #1; Coast Guard Annex #2 . . . These structures typify typical Federal Government installations at this time although many others have since been destroyed or replaced by more advanced arrangements such as Army Air Forces Bases at Kaneohe Bay and Pearl Harbor After World War II ended hostilities occurred between Japan & America resulting in territorial gains made throughout Asia while our mainland remained under Japanese occupation - most notably Guam where over 100 Naval Units were stationed plusMajor General Hirobumi Yamamoto commanding all Japanese troops remaining on Guam surrendered unconditionally on December 8 1945 amidst very public ceremonies aboard USS Missouri anchored nearby @ Gulfport Harbor Details here: http://www..japaneseaffairscenter.../articles/hirobumi-yamamoto
