Mercer Island is a municipally-owned island in the Puget Sound region of Washington, located about northwest of Seattle and southeast of Tacoma. During World War II, many military personnel were stationed on or near Mercer Island due to its strategic location as an airfield across Puget Sound from Seattle and its proximity to other naval bases in Northwest Washington State. Mercer Island is located in the Puget Sound region of Washington and is home to one of the largest naval shipsyards in the United States, as well as a variety of civilian and military businesses. Mercer Island has been occupied by humans since at least 10,000 BC, when people from the nearby island of "Nahant" traded goods with sailors on what is now Seattle. The first permanent human settlement on Mercer Island was founded in 1851 by Captain George Vancouver, who named it for himself and his brother-in-law Sir John Russian River. In 1854, Congress passed an act authorizing the construction of a lighthouse on Mercer Island. The first lighthouse was built in 1858 and operated until 1901; it was replaced by a newer structure that still stands today. The original lighthousekeeper's house remains standing as a contributing property to the National Register of Historic Places. In 1899, lumber magnate Andrew Mellon donated land to create Mercer Island Naval Shipbuilding Center (later known as NASSCO). NASSCO became one of North America's leading shipbuilders during World War II and produced a wide range of combat vessels including submarines, bombers, and merchant ships. After World War II ended, NASSCO shifted its production emphasis towards commercial vessels and ceased operations on Mercer Island in 1972. In 1985–1986, NASSCO developed the world's first self-propelled watercraft capableof landing on an ice shelf - the Lake Roosevelt Lighthouse Landing Boat Service which served as both an operational Coast Guard station and tourist attraction until 1992 when it closed down due to budget cuts. Today only portions of dock walk remain from NASSCO's heyday while most buildings have been demolished or converted into housing or office space. The 1990s saw significant redevelopment take place on Mercer Island following enactment of Initiative 522 which called for spending $205 million over five years to improve infrastructure including roads, trails/paths, public transportation,. This initiative led to new development along many blocks near where NASSCO once stood while also helping preserve some older structures such as former barracks used by Marines during World War II
