Mercer Island is a small island located in Puget Sound, between Seattle and Tacoma. It is home to the Mercer Island Air Force Base, which is one of the largest military installations in the United States. The first people to live on Mercer Island were Native Americans who hunted game on the island. In 1855, John Mercer donated land to the Washington Territory for Use by Government Officials only. In 1865, Congress passed legislation creating King's Cove Reserve on the south side of Mercer Island for human use only. This reserve became part of King's Cove National Monument in 1937. In 1909, it was decided that an airfield should be built on what is now known as northeast corner of east side of Mercer Island between Seattle and Tacoma airports because there was inadequate land available for development north of these airports. Construction began on what would become Boeing Field on this site in December of that year and ended in May 1915 when all combat operations at Boeing Field were transferred to Davis-Monthan AFB outside Phoenix AZ after World War I ended. Mercer Island is a small island in Puget Sound, located in the Seattle metropolitan area. It is bordered to the north by Lake Washington and to the east by Bainbridge Island. The island was named for Commodore John Mercer, who had chartered a ship there in 1851. The first permanent settler on Mercer Island was James Cook, who explored it during his U.S.–British voyage of 1792–93. Cook called the island "Island No. 2" because he believed that there were two such islands in Puget Sound, one near Elliott Bay and the other off its southern coast. In 1853, Congress appropriated $5,000 to purchase land for a military fort on Mercer Island which would become Fort Point; construction began but stopped due to lack of money. A lighthouse was built at present-day Fort Point in 1872 and served until 1907 when it was replaced by an automated facility known as Point Defiance Lighthouse which today remains operational as part of Seattle's Harborview Medical Center campus. In 1896, Seattle entrepreneur George Wickersham donated land at Long Wharf on Bainbridge Island for what would become Mercer Island Naval Air Station (MIS). He also donated tools and equipment necessary for NAS operations including an observation tower and hangar which are still extant today within MIS boundaries. In 1933, MIS became Headquarters Department of Navy Supply Depot Fourth Fleet when Naval Operating Base Pacific became operational at nearby Eniwetok Atoll with similar facilities ashore. During World War II Italian prisoners of war were held on IS until 1945 before being transferred to various Japanese camps across Southeast Asia where they perished from starvation or disease caused by British colonialism After Japan's surrender in 1945, most Japanese prisoners were released except for about 10% who remained behind at IS where many suffered from malnutrition or disease before finally being repatriated to Japan proper between 1946-1949 according to US Military Records The last American POWs remaining on IS after World War II were discharged between 1951-1954 according to US Military Records Today Tsingtao Elementary School &Ronald Reagan Presidential Library are located on Misawa Peninsula opposite Misawa Air Field along with additional buildings used by MIS such as Hangar #2 now home to Sea-Tac Airport & NAS Annex building now home to Adm Ben Hodges Marine Lab) Fort Point Light House stand proud today once again serving as a symbol of maritime defense against piracy/smuggling into our harbor

The island was named for General James Mercer, who fought in the American Revolution. The land that is now Mercer Island was purchased from the Port Royal Indian Treaty Company in 1792. In 1863, Congress created a U.S. military post on the island to protect commerce between Puget Sound and California. After World War II, Pacific Northwest Airlines operated a passenger route from Seattle to Mercer Island using a single runway until it closed in 1984.
