Mercer Island is a small island located in the Puget Sound region of Washington, United States. It is bordered by the Duwamish River to the south and east, the Olympic Mountains to the north, and Queen Anne's Islands to the west. The name Mercer Island comes from George Mercer, who purchased it in 1853. The island has been inhabited by various tribes of Indians for over 300 years. The first Europeans to visit Mercer Island were fishermen looking for fish in 1805. They named the island "Enderby" after one of their catch. In 1821, Captain James Cook sailed into Puget Sound and discovered what he thought was a mountain peak called "Mount Baker." He named it Mountancouver after his captain, Sir John Vancouver. Cook's map showed him that Enderby was actually part of Orcas Island which he had not realized until this time. In 1853, George Mercer bought land around Enderby from Chief Manuel Cascaro for $1 million dollars. He built a home on Enderby Point on Mercer Island and made his first commercial fishing trip from there in 1854. Later that year, he opened an insurance company on Enderby Point with partner Jethro Gibbs. That same year also sawthe opening of the first post office on Enderby Point- an outpost established by Captains James Moore and Robert Barclay as they traveled between Seattle and Tacoma across Lake Washington just south of present day Issaquah City limits). In 1862, Commodore Perry’s force invaded Canada while underWAYLORD Perry’s flag; during this time many islands including Enderby were seized as part of this effort led by Commodore Perry himself! Many people died because no one knew how to swim or fly! One account says “The Islanders ran away like scared rabbits when we got close enough to land; some swam ashore but most got overboard when we fired several shots at them; soon afterwards all disappeared behind shoals Fossil Forest Reef” (Moses Holland). In 1865 Commander Samuel Farragut landed his own forces at anchor off shore near Issaquah on what is now known as Prince Rupert Dock while under way back from Alaska against Russian opposition – another instance where islands were taken without notice! During World War I (1914-1918), merchant ships carrying supplies upriver stopped at Dutch Harbor before continuing upriver through Elliott Bay along today's Piñon Bridge landsurface past Dutch Harbor joining Seattle sometime after October 15th 1918 - note: Spanish Flu season started early December 1914 so there may be some confusion here about when these events happened! After WWI ended things changed on Mercer Island with organized hunting becoming popular due to increased access to resources like salmonid eggs etc., hunters gradually replaced earlier Indian inhabitants over time although hunting rights continued held by various groups today until 1976 when state law transferred those rights back partially or fully unto local governments/managers…..during late 1960s thru early 1970s gun control advocates began using beachcombing laws passed subsequently during general session 1974 limitation hearings against registered firearms picnics being held annually became more stridently opposeable than ever previously……………. This park included a beach, playgrounds, tennis courts, soccer fields,a basketball court anda bandstand/pumpkin field area.

However, recent efforts have begun to revive interest in Mercer Island through initiatives such as bike-sharing programs and waterfront redevelopment plans featuring preserved wetlands and restored maritime architecture
