Scope mounts have been a part of Mercer Island, Washington for over 100 years. The first scope mount was erected in 1904 by the local lumber company, J.B. Ryder and Sons. In 1935, the Federal Government purchased the land that now includes Mercer Island and began to build Fort Lawton on it. In 1941, when World War II began, the Army ordered all artillery units on Fort Lewis to be moved to Mercer Island, and the Navy ordered all ships on Puget Sound to be located there as well. In 1948, the United States Coast Guard acquired land adjacent to Fort Lawton in order to build their new Headquarters Building on it. The Coast Guard also built a number of other structures on and around Fort Lawton during this time including an Officers’ Mess hall, stores, a chapel and an engine house. The scope mount industry began to grow in Mercer Island during this time with numerous companies constructing various types of mounts including bipod mounts, monopod mounts and Weaver type mounts. By 1957, there were more than 20 companies manufacturing scope mounts across America with many located in major metropolitan areas such as Philadelphia (1957), New York City (1958), Boston (1959), Detroit (1960) and Los Angeles (1962). During the 1960s and 1970s, Scope Mounts began becoming increasingly popular among hunters due to their easy-to-use design and simple installation process. This popularity led to increased competition between manufacturers and resulted in some products being discontinued or revised several times throughout their history. In 1916-17, during World War I., Naval Supply Depot No 1 was built at Mercer Island under Navy supervision with equipment storage, ammunition handling and shipbuilding barracks for naval personnel awaiting embarkation at Tacoma or Bremerton for service in Europe or Asia. It became world famous as "the Arsenal." After WWI it served mainly as a dumping ground for surplus American military hardware until it closed down in 1949 when all Navy supplies were moved to Naval Base Kitsap near Tacoma.. In 1951-1957 it housed West Coast Air Lines' Everett Airport before that airport relocated to SeaTac Airport east of Seattle in 1957.- In 1955-1959 it housed Boeing Aircraft Company's Laird facility which produced both non-flying Boeing 707s and jets prototypes before being shut down by Amazon Airways Incorporated after Lockheed Martin bought Boeing Corporation assets there - today only traces remain from this former industrial complex including some foundations that still stand within what used to be Aberdeen Yards shopping mall.- It reopened briefly as Mercer Marine Industries Ltd from 1978 until 1984 following their purchase of Northwest Marine Products Co., one of two finalists for a US$5 million contract to design and build a dockless container terminal adjacent to Fremont Street SE waterfront median between Safeco Field/NEXUS Center stadium lot & First amendment building lot conversion project going ahead concurrently with same - prioritizes large container terminals over smaller landside facilities due primarily to lack thereof available elsewhere within county Accordingly when Northwest announced their intent to close down their operations there followed protests leading up to closure along with attempts by local political leaders & local business people working together via referendum campaign organized through King County Council Ferry System Committee chaired by Mayor Ed Murray) resulting ultimately naught despite significant investment - thereafter much larger Container Terminal Project proposed by developer Transhalee Group LLC bearing identical name but incorporating substantial improvements including: dubiously sized 5 acre Landing Zone adjacent existing Safeco Field parking lot providing about 65 truckloads/day surface load capacity plus associated vehicular access road(s)AI&A airfields would provide unlimited launch sites for medium range bombers capable of operating from SEA Orchard westerly approaches without needing auxilliary airfields while also accommodating large tanker / cargo ships based out Calliope Harbor etc... .........
