Mercer Island is an unincorporated community in Kitsap County, Washington. It is located on the north coast of Mercer Island, between the towns of Seattle and Tacoma. The population was 792 at the 2000 census. In 1881, a group of land speculators led by John Mercer bought 6 miles (10 km) of beachfront from the Native American tribes for $5 per acre ($2/ha). They built a town on the beach, naming it after their father-in-law, George Mercer. The town had two schools, a post office, and a few businesses before it was abandoned in 1906 due to competition from nearby Seattle. Mercer Island housed several naval stations during World War II: Naval Station Bremerton (1941–1945), Naval Station Puget Sound (1946–1949), Naval Station Whidbey Island (1950), and Naval Station Kaneohe Bay (1951–1955). The last station closed in 1955 and all personnel were transferred to other Navy stations. In 1960, the town became part ofSeattle when King County was created. Today only a small section of the old downtown remains standing as part of the remnant town museum
Mercer Island was first settled by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805. The area became a U.S. Naval Station in 1908, and then an airfield during World War II. Mercer Island is now a research center for the University of Washington.
