The Mercer Island High Capacity Kits (HCK) project is a $128 million, 10-year effort to build a new high capacity bus line in Mercer Island, Washington. The HCK will improve the flow of traffic on I-5 and create new jobs. The project began in 2006 when the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) partnered with MERCER ISLAND BUSINESS INC. to develop a plan for the development of a high capacity bus line in Mercer Island. WSDOT and MERCER ISLAND BUSINESS INC. agreed to develop and fund the project together, with each party holding an equal percentage of the total cost. In December 2009, WSDOT awarded a contract to Kiewit Corporation to design, engineer, test and construct the HCK lines between Redmond and Seattle. The first phase of construction is expected to begin in 2020 and be completed by 2025. In total, there are six HCK lines: two between Redmond and Seattle, two between Bellevue and Seattle, one from Issaquah to Tacoma, one from Lynnwood to Everett and one from Everett to Kirkland. “We are very excited about this important project that will improve safety for drivers as well as provide more convenience for passengers” said Jeff Laddell , President & CEO of MERCER ISLAND BUSINESS INC., “The HCK will make it easier for people living in King County or Puget Sound area to get around town without having too much traffic congestion caused by buses travelling at rush hour."
