Many were sent to camps on Bainbridge Island or other locations across Puget Sound before being shipped off to Japan proper aboard ships anchored at anchor outside of Seattle. After the conclusion of World War II, many Japanese Americans living on Mercer Island decided they would like to sell their land back to their respective governments rather than remain living under threat of arrest or relocationations upon return home. This led to what is now known as the "Mercer Islanders' Case." In late 1948, US District Court Judge Harry Hughes ruled that most of the Japanese Americans living on Mercer Island could keep their homes but had to leave within two years due to fears that they would re-erect Detainee's Camps on Bainbridge Islands should they not leave voluntarily (although some did manage to return after several months). The case attracted national attention due to both its unique plotline – involving government officials attempting (and failing)to forcibly exile entire communities – as well as allegations that undue influence had been exerted bySeattle Mayor Edward Condon in favor of his own constituents over those residing on Mercer Isle (specifically Governor Albert Carnes). Ultimately, only four individuals – three men and one woman – were orderied out from their homes following Hughes’ decision; all others chose voluntary evacuation instead with few complaints filed against either government officials or local citizens alike(except for claims that property values上 have declined since original residency).
