Mercer Island is a small, unincorporated community in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. It is located on the eastern coast of Mercer Island, between the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound. The population was 2,752 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit Mercer Island was Capt John Dallimore during 1792. A landing party led by Lt. James Cook reached it on December 8th from ship "Endeavour" after a voyage of 135 days and 7 nights. George Vancouver explored it in 1794 while exploring British Columbia before his expedition to North America in HMS Discovery sailed from Portsmouth on July 14th, 1795 and arrived at Victoria Bay on September 15th. On November 21st Captain James Cook landed his second party including David Thompson who surveyed the area surrounding False Cape claims (present day Mount Baker) which were later claimed by Seattle and became part of Mercer Island. The first permanent settler was Abram Wright who arrived in 1841. He started a ferry service across Puget Sound between Townsend and Mercer Island until he sold the business to Jens Rasmussen in 1865. In 1951 construction began on what is now known as "Island Park" which replaced an earlier military reservation along the east side of Mercer island that had been used for target practice since 1839 by Commander Robert Eberle's Unit 10-A1 stationed at Fort Point at Prospect Point naval station.. In 1962 when newly created King County acquired most of Kitsap County, including Mercer Island, it also agreed to convey all land east of US 101 within one mile (1 km) of its shoreline so that development could take place without disturbing or interfering with cultural resources henceforth known as "Mercer Island National Monument". After years of planning and fundraising both public and private donations have helped make this possible with new infrastructure such as a visitor center/research facility/hospital open to the public since 1996 as well as numerous homesites available for purchase or rent overlooking Puget Sound Naval Shipyard where many ships are built including USS Enterprise (CVN 68). Today there are more than 1,000 people living on or near Mercer Island making it an increasingly popular tourist destination accessible only by boat or helicopter due to its stunning scenery; diverse ecosystems; rich history; pristine beaches; desolate approaches; dramatic coastal cliffs; rugged landscape; fresh water sources; abundant wildlife sightings such as Bald Eagleumsia marginata perched atop Mt Olympus Head lighthouse tower watching gulls Feeding their young off Lookout Rock beach cove

Mercer Island is located in Kitsap County, Washington on the eastern side of Puget Sound. The island is named after General Mercer, who helped lead the Washougal Expedition against the U.S. Native American tribes in 1836-37. The island was first settled by Europeans in the early 1800s and became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1960. The first Europeans to visit Mercer Island were British officers who arrived aboard HMS Discovery on July 24, 1792. Captain John Frankland and his Marine Artillery detachment disembarked at Rock Harbor on Mercer Island and began mapping what would become Seattle when they sailed back home that day. Two weeks later, they returned to HM Ships Discovery and erected two tents on shore before continuing their exploration of Puget Sound which led them to think that there might be land beyond what they had seen from Discovery Bay. In 1802, Captains George Vancouver and Alexander Mackenzie explored Puget Sound for the Northwest Company and came across Admiralty Inlet where they anchored their ships for supplies before sailing northwestward along Elliott Bay until they reached Elliott Strait which separates Puget Sound from Canada's coast. After reaching Strait of Alaska, Vancouver discovered King George Strait and entered into Canadian waters near present-day Prince Rupert; this discovery opened up new hunting grounds for white men in North America for many years thereafter. In 1806 James Cook visited Asia Minor while exploring North America but no record exists of his journey through or around Puget Sound until he crossed it while attempting to reach Japan via Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula during his circumnavigation ofAsia in 1787-88 AGO2A1H1D3G1B4F3K1R6J3L3V7P8O9N2U5I9E10A1B2X). On November 12th 1807 Phillip Nolan sighted Cape Flattery south of modern daySeattle after spending three days ashore at Bothell Cove looking for Queen Charlotte’s Islands offshore from today’s Bainbridge Island east of Seattle… northwest corner between cape Flattery Pointe & Point Padden Head...the spot now occupied by Terminal Field [sic] at CenturyLink Field! This latest addition to our skyline – Porter Elementary School located just east of Terminal Field! - appeared as an indistinct line on charts made by Captn Vd Nelson during his second trip around these parts some time prior to October 15th1807…. At about point Raggedy Ann [now known as Tacoma Ferry Landing], Captn Vd Nelson reported seeing land extending easterly about 4 miles with a reef extending seaward about 1/4 mile offshore....He called it Russian River ( Fraser River now ). No one knows how long this name may have been used by either side….[T]he main body now lying northeastof terminal field appears to be Isiguinishk [Isiguita] Inlet - Possibility that this was formerly called Dutch Harbor southeastof Point Padden Head - latter name being probably given due to proximity of Dutch Fort at Port Townsend...This location has also been proposed as site for future Green Lake Naval Air Station….." The Mercer Island, Washington history begins with the first settlers in 1851.
