By 1870, only a few dozen people lived on Mercer Island but it had become an important stopover for steamboats running between Seattle and packed markets down south such as Tacoma and Olympia. In 1912, Congress designated Mercer Island as an experimental farmlands research station run by US Department of Agriculture (USDA) under Project Cascadia which aimed to provide food for Americans living in northern cities during World War I based upon evidence that fresh produce could not be grown nearer urban areas due to lack of soil moisture availability or other environmental factors such as pests or disease vectors that might contaminate urban crops). Mercer Island is a small island located in the Puget Sound region of Washington, United States. The island was first settled by the Chisholm tribe in 1849. After World War II ended, Helifore Station reverted to Coast Guard control and continued operations until 1959 when it came under management of the University of Washington School of Fisheries Science after which it operated as an open research station until 1978 when its purpose changed to that of an educational institution focused on marine ecology with facilities for fishing and science students alike including an aquarium, rainforest tour stop/research center/laboratory/botanical garden/. In 1994-1996, Congress passed legislation annexing Mercer Island into King County (Washington).
