Mercer Island, Washington is the largest city in South Puget Sound and the county seat of Thurston County. With a population of over 200,000 people, Mercer Island is one of the most populous cities in the Western US. The area that now makes up Mercer Island was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. In 1854, James Wickersham donated land to be used as a military reservation for Native Americans. The reservation was renamed Fort Snelling after George Snelling, an American general who had fought in Mexico and California during the Mexican-American War. Afterward, many settlers from Sweden and Norway came to Mercer Island to farm land that they had purchased from Wickersham. By 1890, however, only 2% of the population of Mercer Island was Swedish or Norwegian; most residents were English and American citizens. By 1910, Mercer Island had a majority Swedish/Norwegian population (82%). In 1916, Seattle became an official U.S. city and its mayor appointed a committee to develop plans for what would become downtown Seattle. One suggestion was creating an amusement park on Elliott Bay called Lakeview Park which would include a stadium for football and baseball games as well as other amusements such as circuses and operas. The Committee on Development recommended that Seattle give control of Mercer Island to Portland so that it could be used as an open-air port for shipping goods into downtownSeattle via Tacoma's new harbor connection (now Discovery Harbor). This idea never materialized but Minneapolis did establish a port on the island in 1918 with access through Union Bayou from Lake Washington shoreline

In 1892, Sheppard and Fenton merged with the Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester Ammunition Corporation. The company produced rifles, shotguns, handguns and other firearms products until it ceased operations in 1996.

Mercer Island, Washington was founded in 1851 by Captain John Mercer and his crew of nine men. The island is located about two miles north of the mouth of the Tualatin River and is now a part of the City of Portland. It became a town in 1858, and was named for Captain Mercer and his crew. The first permanent settler on Mercer Island was Mr. Holmes. He built a log cabin on what is now the east side of the island. In 1861, Mrs. Holmes erected a small blockhouse to serve as a storehouse for her familys farmstead on what is now Capitol Hill. This blockhouse still stands today and can be seen from many streets in Portland. In 1865, Mr. Holmes sold his land to Captn Auldridge who laid out a town Plan on which he erected houses, stores, churches, baths and other public buildings including an arsenal that still stands today on Adams Street across from the old post office building (now called Providence Park). On March 3rd, 1876 Captn Auldridge renamed Mercer Island "Portland" after Prince Albert Hastings Royal Prince Consort who had been appointed Governor-General of Canada by Queen Victoria after her husband's death at 65 years old while serving as Commander-in-chief in India during the Second Anglo-Boer War with British South Africa In 1886 Captn Alfred Yule donated 165 acres (60 hectares) around what is now Capitol Hill to create what is known as Pioneer Square which includes much of downtown Portland including several blocks around NE First Ave., NW Morrison St., SW Fourth Ave., SE Stark St., SW Harrison St., Naito Parkway & NE Couch St.. This area remained largely undeveloped until it was developed into Pioneer Square Park in 1912 by developer Charles Fenton with donations from numerous local businesses including The Oregonian Newspaper Company Ltd..
