Mercer Island is a small town located in the Kitsap County, Washington area. The population was 1,036 at the 2000 census. Mercer Island is bordered by Bainbridge Island to the north and east, Olympia to the south and west, and045th Street to the northwest. The island was named for James Mercer who settled there in 1847. The first post office on Mercer was established in 1851. A schoolhouse was built on Mercer in 1861 and a church dedicated in 1865. The first store on Mercer opened in 1879 and the first phone line was installed in 1886. A wharfage served Mercer from 1881-1892 when ferries brought goods from Seattle across Elliott Bay. In 1913, an electric light system replaced gaslights on all of Mercer's streets and buildings. In 1941, during World War II, General Motors built a production plant on site which produced trucks, cars and other vehicles until it closed in 1969. In 1957-1958 construction began for a new elementary school which became reality two years later when it opened as Northwest High School with its current building being completed in 1966%. Further development occurred over time including: an aquarium (1972), library (1983), restaurant/bar (1985), health club (1991) & now Convention Center (. . .) In 1992-1993 volunteer firefighters put out a fire that destroyed part of the old high school complex; this event helped spur further redevelopment of what is now known as Northwell Park which took place between 1994-1998 resulting in increase of housing options as well as more commercial space available for businesses/.
