Marysville is a small town in King County, Washington, located on the eastern edge of the Yakima Valley. The community was founded in 1854 by members of the Spear family, who were farmers and traders. The town name comes from Mount Mary, which is located within the community. The first settlers in Marysville were David Spear and his wife Rebecca. They arrived in 1854 and built a log cabin near the present-day intersection of State Route 99A and State Route 99B. In 1865, they bought 640 acres (248 ha) of land east of Marysville from John Dibble for $1 per acre. This land became known as Spear Ranch. In 1868, David Spear Jr., son ofDavid Spear Sr., married Margaret Hillstrom. Margaret was from nearby New Market and had come to Northwest Territorial America with her parents when she was five years old. She Initialed herself as MARYSVILLE after her mother's maiden name. The first school in Marysville was built in 1868 by Mrs. Cushman or Crouse with help from some local residents including Mrs. Fenton and Drury Hagopian (later Bishop). It was taught by voluntary teachers until 1870 when government funded schools began operation in King County under the direction of Superintendent James Hutton Smithson III.. In 1870-71, two teachers left to start their own school at Swan Lake due to lack of funding but returned after a short time because there was enough money available to build a new school addition that year on an adjacent lot purchased by Mr/Mrs Ahern for $500+. In 1872-73 three additional teachers Left for similar reasons; however before long all public schools throughout King County were run by School DistrictFifteen (SD15), which included Marysville through its incorporation into SD15 on January 1st 1876 . By 1880 there were ninety nine citizens living in Marysville with thirty one businesses; thirty six craftsmen; eleven farmers; eleven fishermen; four mechanics; two shoemakers; one blacksmith; one wagonmaker/holsterist ; one artist ; three trustees For every hundred fifty eight people living then there would be fifteen business owners! By 1890 only thirteen citizens remained with nineteen businesses plus sixteen craftspeople and twelve farmers while seventeen residents worked outside the home providing services such as transportation, groceries, cleaning etcetera...Today only four active citizens remain within our limits making it difficult to determine what life back then must have been like! Some interesting facts about this time include that WILLIAM BARNES became Mayor of Yakima Falls during this time period while GEORGE BALLOWAY also resided here… The last active resident died on February 2nd 1924 at age seventy seven leaving behind five children who are now eighty seven years old including Fort Worth Ballway himself who resides here full time along side his current wife Gertrude who still resides here today!
