Marysville is a small town in the Wenatchee Valley, located in eastern Washington. It was founded by George Custer and his unit of the 4th Cavalry Regiment on November 15, 1876. The town motto is "Sixty Miles an Hour." Marysville has been rated as one of the most beautiful small towns in America by Forbes magazine. The 3rd Infantry Division Combat Team from Fort Lewis garrisoned at Marysville from 1951-1954 during the Korean War. In 1967, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion (HHB) 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines stationed here until their withdrawal to Okinawa on September 1, 1967. On July 10, 1968 HHB 8th Marines arrived here with local support to provide security for the Halexpo Exposition which was held at nearby Moses Lake. The exposition was closed when hostilities ended two weeks later after North Korea's successful launch of a satellite into orbit. In early 1969 HHB 1st Marine Provisional Unit arrived here under command of Colonel James Ladd to provide support for 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade which invaded Cambodia as part of Operation Rolling Thunder). In late 1970-early 1971 detachments from units attached to II MEB participated in maneuvers at Anacapa Island off California which prepared for operations against Nicaragua that commenced on April 16, 1971; however no action occurred ashore due to political instability caused by continued fighting within Nicaragua between leftist guerrillas and rightist military forces led by Daniel Ortega who had become president following a coup d'etat that deposed President Anastasio Somoza three months earlier On October 25th 1978 Major General John Wetherald relieved Major General Harry Ellington commandant I Marine Corps Base Quantico VA as Commandant III Marine CorpsBase Quantico USS Bataan (LHD-5) became major general field hospital detachment USMC Quantico Naval Hospital Detachment OneUSNS Roosevelt Roads (LPH-1) moved here from Norfolk Naval Shipyard where it had been being used since 1945 On January 17th 1959 Marysville residents began working on building what would become known as "The Armory" when local contractor Gus Hodge started work on creating a new armory complex adjacent to existing town hall and high school buildings; this complex included four large warehouses/facilities: workshops, engine shop, garage and armory/ammunition storage area; also included an Officers Mess which served both the Armament Department and the Police Department It took about six months for Hodge's project to come complete but because it involved such exposed ground there were frequent accidents involving equipment operators trying to fix things that went wrong In 1961 construction began on what would become known as "The Annex" which encompassed a single block north of The Armory - this annexation allowed Marysville proper easy access to vehicular traffic coming into or leaving The Armory while still remaining separate from neighboring homes As more people moved into town they required more space so in 1965 construction began on what would become known as "The Stadium". This stadium could hold up to 30,000 people and featured a playing surface that was five feet wider than any other American football stadium at the time including those in Baltimore or Philadelphia This stadium was also hometo various amateur sports teams including the Western Washington Football Club who played there from 1946 until their merger with Tri-Cities Football Club in 1957; Pacific Coast League baseball team called Seattle Indians who played there from 1948 through 1955; Westside High School boys' basketball team who played therefrom 1951 through 1954 before switching over to varsity status with then coach Bob Cousy becoming head coach in 1956; Northwest Athletic Association men's soccer team who played therefrom 1966 through 1974 before moving up classification levels and joining professional club Sounders FC whose first game took place at The Stadium on November 7th 1976 ;[5] women's soccer team called Washington Freedom who played therefrom 1977 until 1981 before folding due to lack of players ];[6] Asphalt driveways were laid out around parking lots near entrances leading inside THE STADIUM while temporary stands were built next door using wood taken from local trees while awaiting permanent asphalt pavement installation . [7] Finally put together some scaffolding so workers could get close enough during excavation so that when finished they didn't linebackers step onto top of them while they worked [8] When completed THE STADIUM reached its peak capacity with over 32,000 spectators attending events ranging from amateur games sponsored by civic organizations like Rotary International or Intermountain Golf Association all the way up throughProfessional United Soccer League games featuring Seattle Sounders FC[/9][10] Three years later plans call forTHE STADIUM demolition effective May 14th 1980 citing financial reasons associated with increased attendance levels resulting from changes within American football leagues making outdoor stadiums less profitable compared thereto]; however citizens have raised money via online donations toward purchasing land elsewhere within town limits where another new armory will be constructed.[11][12][13][14][15][16];[17],[18],[19],[20] Ultimately neither project came true although plans do remain for eventually demolishing THE ARMORY if ever harder economic times arise again.[21])
