In 1906, a new electric power plant was built east of town to provide electricity for the entire Tacoma metropolitan area; this led to increased industry and growth in Maple Valley as businesses moved into new or better facilities nearby including an auto dealership, grocery store, hospital, printer shop and other shops. During World War II, many local farmers became involved with military production due to shortages of food supplies overseas caused by war efforts. A number of factories were located within or adjacent to Maple Valley during wartime: American Can Co., Boeing Aircraft Corp., United Steel Works (USW), Pacific Defense Products (PDP) and Raytheon Missile Plant No 2 (RM2).
