In 1915, when Highway 7 became state route 99 through central King County, most residents shifted from their original community namesakes (Auburn and Maple Valley) to highway numbers corresponding with their new location: Pioneer Square (route 98), 168th Street NE (route 9), etcetera. In 1935 or 1936, when state route 5 intersected I-5 just north of downtown Seattle and served as an interchange between these two highways (the only one then open in that area), some residents decided to keep their old community namesakes but number their streets accordingly; this system still exists today among many people in general who remain close friends from those days around mile marker 169th Street NE ( routing 980). The following year saw the opening of Interstate 5 Olsen Road exit 221B which connected local access roads southbound off I-5 with Exit 222A leading out into rural King County - this allowed for more direct access by citizens from nearby cities including Kirkland and Redmond without having to go through Auburn or Maple Valley first.
