Maple Valley, Washington is a city in Klickitat County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,571 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Klickitat County. The first permanent settler in Maple Valley was George Armstrong Custer who arrived in 1847. He and his family left Nebraska after a harsh winter and journeyed overland to what is now Klickitat County. By 1850, there were six families living in Maple Valley. In 1853, James McKay founded an agricultural settlement on the site of what would later become downtown Maple Valley with help from John Waddell and others from Oregon Territory. In 1861-1862, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Maple Valley served as Confederate campground for forces near present day Tacoma. In 1870-71, Jens Jensen purchased 2 acres (0.8 km2) of land on Center Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue in downtown Maple Valley for $10 per acre ($/km²). That same year he erected a two story log house which still stands today as the first building in town – it became home to both his business and social life until it burned down in 1903; also that year maple syrup was made here for the first time commercially by Schmidt’s grocery store proprietor Daniel Schmidt Jr., using equipment imported from Germany In 1876-77 Holman & Son built a one story frame schoolhouse on Third Street between Pioneer Road and First Avenue – this building remains standing today as part of the Maple Valley Historical Society Museum complex dating back to 1915 A post office opened at Maple Valley on November 3rd, 1881 under name Clearwater Springs; at that time it had a population of five residents A mail service operated out of Clearwater Springs until 1909 when it was moved to Seattle A gas station followed suit shortly thereafter Downtown Maple valley began to grow rapidly due to new construction projects such as an opera house built by Mrs. Ottenheimer (later Mrs._ Banning) which stand today between Fourth Street and Sixth Street east of Main Street .
