In 1907, Hap Arnold opened a grocery store on 5th Avenue North which became a local center for firearm sales and repair along with Wesson Firearms Company (now Brownells) which operated from 1911 to 1945. Arnold also cofounded the Independent Riflemen of America (IRA) in 1918 while serving as its president at its Hazel Park headquarters before moving his operations to Maple Valley in 1919 where he continued to lead the organization until his death in 1944.
