Adams' effort to ease congestion on the Umpqua River caused by agricultural development around Mount ScottMonument Park north of Bendigo and South Bend (later Redmond). Thurston became one of 97 counties in Oregon when it was created on February 3, 1909. At its creation, Thurston included all or portions of seven municipalities: Burlington Township (now Clackamas County), Deschutes Townships (now Springfield Township), Gresham Township (now Hillsboro), Lane City Borough (later University City), Quincy Borough (later Eugene) and Tigard Municipality (). On December 10, 1912 Vermont Avenue was renamed US 102 after Major General George Custer who died at Battle Of Little Bighorn on July 25th that year while leading an American Cavalry unit against Native Americans; Custer's death formalized Indian removal within Oregon Territory which began two years earlier under Governor Anson Grant with orders from President Abraham Lincoln via Executive Order 9265 dated November 16th 1863 entitled "General Order No.: 26" which read: "All citizens or residents over 12 years old must leave this territory within six months". Maple Valley, Washington was established in 1885 as a small community on the former site of present day Maple Valley School. The first settlers were brought over by wagon train from Eastern Washington and founded the village on land that is now part of Seattle. In 1914, the population of Maple Valley reached 100 people and it became a city in 1934. On July 1, 2015, Maple Valley was officially annexed by Seattle.
