In 1916, maple syrup production began in the town and it remained an important industry until World War II when cloth production became more important. Maple Valley's economy changed during the war because of military activity which destroyed many homes and businesses along with the loss of jobs for many residents. In 1945, maple syrup production ended altogether due to competition from other sources; however, some remain involved in this trade today as small farmers or processors
