An early business district developed around the sawmill and gristmill on Third Street between Everett and Union Streets; merchants included JOHN LEE (the founder of what is now Boeing), HENRY KELLY (the owner of the Kelley House hotel near Tacoma), JAMES PEMBRICK (a miller and real estate developer) and WILLIAM SUSSEX (a lumberman and farmer). In 1860, SILAS BARNES moved to Lynnwood from Farmington after purchasing 640 acres northeast of Lynnwood from JULIAN ETHERTON for $10 per acre. A new post office called "Lynnwood" was established at this location on November 11, 1860; it remained in operation until 1959. In 1865 JOSEPH NEWMAN opened a grocery store in what is now known as Newmarket Square; he remains an important figure in local history.
