In Lynnwood, Washington, there have been efforts to create an optical history for the city since at least the early 1800s. In 1846, a group of businessmen and entrepreneurs met to discuss methods of improving the quality of life in Lynnwood. They came up with the idea of creating a public library in order to promote reading and learning in the community. The group also purchased land on Seventh Avenue South and began construction on what would become the first library building in Lynnwood. The library was originally called "The People's Library" because it was intended as a public service that would be open to all residents of Lynnwood. The building was designed by local architect John Latham and opened on October 15, 1851. It was one of the first libraries in America and is still used today as a library. In 1895, another group of businessmen formed to improveLynnwood's infrastructure. This time they decided to focus their efforts on getting water from nearby reservoirs into town so that citizens could enjoy clean water without having to go out into countryside for it. They also developed plans for renovating existing buildings and putting new ones up in honor of county officials, business leaders, military veterans, and other dignitaries who had donated their time or money towards makingLynnwood a better place.
