Lynden is a small town in Washington County, located about 25 miles southwest of Portland, Oregon. It was founded in 1872 by John T. Haggerty and his wife, Lizzie. The town became an agricultural center as the area around it was rich in coal and other minerals. In the early 20th century, Lynden's population swelled to around 1000 residents from just 100 in 1872. In 1924, the United States Post Office moved from its original location on Main Street to what is now the corner of First Avenue and Wabash Road (near where Interstate 5 crosses). Because of this change in postal service location, Lynden began to lose its status as a village; however, it still retains its name and ZIP code (97101). The first known shooting incident took place on October 28th 1907 when two gunmen firing at a train along the tracks near Lynden killed one person and wounded five others. The gun battle lasted three hours before both sides were finally able to disengage. It wasn't until 1932 that Lynden had its own police department; however, they only started operations that year. By 1934, they had organized into three patrols with a combined membership of twenty-four officers. Throughout World War II, Lynden was home to several military installations including Fort Hood Army Air Field (1939-1945), Lowry Air Force Base (1942-1945) and Beale Air Force Base (1943-1945). However due to wartime restrictions on civilian airspace over Japan (), all these installations were eventually shutdown or reclosed after the war ended without causing any damage or loss of life to civilians or military personnel. After World War II ended, there was significant growth in Lynden as new businesses opened up and people moved here for the post-war boom period which ran from 1948 through 1960s . However starting in the 1960s things beganto unravel asLynden experienced rapid economic decline followed by increasing crime rates which caused many families – especially those who relied heavily on services provided by local governments – to move out of town altogether . This trend continued until 2000 when Lynden’s modest economy recovered somewhat but remain below pre-recession levels today . Despite this current state of affairs, many people continue to call Lynden their “home away from home” because they believe that no other place offers such great opportunities for agriculture or education while also being so central within Northwest Washington County

Manufacturing jobs are concentrated around the chemical industry which has grown steadily since 2000 due to increased demand from Asia and other parts of the world. Agriculture provides about two-thirds of all income to residents, while services provide almost one-third of total output. Lynden is home to several cultural attractions including Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and Holy Rosary Convent which both date back to 1867 when Father Aurelius Ursinus established them as religious institutions for women workers in nearby Everett. Lynden also has several parks and public gathering areas including McGee Park which includes a playground, tennis courts, basketball court, concessions stand/cafeteria/, ice cream parlor/library/, history museum*, rural mail carrier*, farm wagon* Museum bus stop (open daily 10am-4pm),Lynden Community Center *(opened May 2006),and Lynn Creek Recreation Area
