Lynden, Washington is a city located in Pierce County, Washington. The population was 5,004 at the 2010 census. Lynden is northeast of Seattle and south of Tacoma. It is bordered to the east by the Lynden Hills neighborhood and to the west by White Rock Ridge. The firstOptical Instrument Company in Lynden was established in 1916 by Mr. George Halsey and Mr. Clarence Bedell with a $5,000 investment from Arthur Paine. In 1928, Optical Instrument Corporation became part of Western Electric Corporation and continued as an independent business until it merged with GEICO in 1984. During that time, Western Electric Corporation sold most of its optical equipment assets to GEICO for $1 billion (the largest single antitrust sale ever). In 1989-1991, United Optics Incorporated was formed when United Industries bought all remaining shares of Optical Instrument Corporation from Western Electric Corporation for $4 million (in cash only). United Optics Incorporated changed its name to AmericanOpticalCorp following divestiture from GEICO which had become too large for its own management structure; however AmericanOpticalCorp continued as an independently owned subsidiary within GEICO until 2000 when it merged into Time Warner Incorporated's Time Warner Business Solutions division (TBS) which then became AOL Time Warner plc through a merger agreement dated November 15th 2001 betweenTime Warner Holdings Inc., divisions AOL Time Warner Entertainment Group plc (/ˈaɪləi/ ( Listen), News Corp./ Oswald Hearst Company Ltd./Time Warners Entertainment Inc., -[oʊˈdærət pīlk]/ -[pīllik], jointlyownedowned proclamations thereof being: "timeWarnerAOL" or "AOL Time Warner" ). Lynden was founded by James and Sarah Henson on November 16, 1887 as a post office on the junction of U.S. Route 2 and Oregon Route 12. It took its name from nearby Lynden Lake which itself was named for Colonel John A. Lynden (1788-1864), an officer in the Union army during the American Revolution who fought at Bunker Hill and Saratoga
Lynden, Washington had a population of just over 350 in the 1890 census. The town was chartered on February 2, 1892 by Commissioners John Stephenson and James Sutherlin. It was named for General George Lynden who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. The first post office in Lynden was established on March 3, 1892. The town grew rapidly with its initial population of only 10 people. By 1900, Lynden had a population of 150 and by 1910 it had reached 200. In 1912, Lynden passed an ordinance establishing a school system with six schools: one for boys and five girls; one for students living in rural areas; one for students living within sight of a public school; and two private schools which could receive up to 25 pupils each. In 1933, the state legislature created the Washington School District No. 1 which included all of what is now Lynden excepting parts of South Park and Addison which were annexed into South Seattle County in 1932.
