Lynden, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,854 at the 2010 census. Lynden is located on the east side of the Yakima River and adjacent to the city of Yakima. It is part of the Yakima Valley region. The first Europeans to visit Lynden were traders from Asia who stopped in during their journey up the Yakima River in 1792. In 1851, General George Armistead arrived at what is now Lynden and founded what became known as Armistead Station (now Armistead Park). The local school district was organized in 1907 and Lynden High School opened in 1909. In 1925, local merchant Harry Lundquist donated land for a public high school which would serve students from all over King County. The first graduating class of Lydden High School was announced on December 3, 1927. The name change followed after Lundquist's death that year; he had named his ranch "Lydden" after his hometown of Leeds, England. In 1933-1934 an addition to the high school campus were two new buildings which housed classes for girls until such time as BoysHighSchool could be built on that property; this building still stands today as GirlsHighSchool Annexe #1 with classrooms facing east onto Wall Street across from Main Street Elementary/Secondary School (formerly Blanchard Middle School). In 1961-1962 a new football stadium was constructed bythen- Municipality Manager Don Wattersman for use by bothLydden High School and Yakima Valley Junior College (now YVC) when they merged into one entity under then-Governor David Condon's administration. That same year also saw Lydden become one of only a few towns in King County to win funding for its own water system - through donations by various business owners including Wattersman himself! On October 20, 1962 Lynden residents held a town meeting to discuss ways they could improve their community while also developing plans for annexing neighboring communities: annexation proceedings began later that year with Andover Heights becoming annexed on January 1st 1965 while Bothell annexation occurred three years later on May 2nd 1969 succeeding former neighboring Bothell Village which had been annexed by Lynden following complaints about lapses in service from its own water systems! Today much like it did when it originally started out -Lydden has come into it's own economically thanks largely to its location within close proximity to major metropolitan areas Seattle & Tacoma along with good shopping opportunities available just outside town boundaries as well as several colleges and universities nearby including Eastern Washington University & Whitman State University all of which have large campuses within easy reach providing ample opportunity for both work/study opportunities AND access to quality recreational amenities!
