Lynden, Washington is a town in Kittitas County,Washington located on the Eastern shore of the Yakima River. The population was 1,787 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wenatchee-based Yakima Valley community. Lynden was founded in 1887 by John Hargrave and his wife, Emma. A post office called Lynden was established in 1889, and remained in operation until it were discontinued in 1907. The first store in Lynden was built by S C Swartz and F W Hecht. The first school was built on what is now the main street by Mrs Hargrave and Mr Gorryin In 1903 a gristmill replaced an earlier mill which had been destroyed by fire two years previous. A Baptist church also served as a meeting house for the local farmers until 1940 when it burned down. There has never been a high school (or other type of educational institution) located within Lynden limits; all students attend schools based outside of Wenatchee or Thurston County (which includes most of what is now Lynden). Lynden is home to both Boeing Field Airport and King County Museum - Space Center; both are major employers within the town limits. In addition to its airport jobs, Boeing Field also employs around 100 people across various jobs at nearby Everett Air Force Base and about 60 people at Microsoft's Redmond campus just east of town on Highway 99W near Interstate 5S/Uweitel Road; these companies have made Lynden into one of North America's leading "towns with industry" locations with significant contributions to technology development in many fields throughout Northwest Washington state In recent years there has been increasing attention paid to issues related to climate change including developments like large wind turbines blade-height restrictions being placed on Kittitas County farmland as well as concerns about water resources being impacted as global temperatures continue trending upwards
