During World War II, Lynden served as an airfield for Boeing RB-47s flying strategic bombardment missions over Japan against Japanese targets from nearby Mount Rainier National Park. Post-war growth brought new development to Lynden; including an apartment complex that still stands today (the original building was destroyed by fire in 1957). In 2003, plans were developed to demolish much of downtown Lynden due to concerns about water supplies being affected by increasing residential populations and traffic congestion caused by new development adjacent to downtown streetscape improvements financed with federal funds set aside for flood control projects along Pioneer Creek watershed..
