Lynden began experiencing growth during World War II with the arrival of people working on military bases throughout Puget Sound area such as Naval Station Tacoma and Boeing Air Force Base nearby In 1951,Douglas F3D-4C Skyhawks were brought to Lynden for use by local students at Ed Young High School during P-51 Mustang fly-in exercises called 'Varsity Flyers'. Over time other aircraft types have been brought here like Beechcraft B737s (the first 737 ever made), McDonnell Douglas DC-9s (the world's first commercial jetliners), Piper PA-15 Aerobatics Planes etcetera . In 1984, Lynden adopted its own form of government with semi-presidential form of government under mayor/council system which remains today with some changes including term limits for mayors/council members while still allowing them to serve unlimited terms through 2020 provided they are reelected every three years; this has helped keep city running smoothly since then despite several large cuts to city services due to state budget restrictions over the past few decades Some famous alumni include City Councilmember Dino Rossi who currently represents District 5 on Olympia's State Capitol; Mayor Don Westfall who represented District 2 on Skamania County Superior Court before becoming Mayor; Former Deputy Sheriff Dennis Hecht now lives in Everett WA; former Olympic Gold Medalist Lenny Bruce resides locally also another well known alumna
