Lynden, Washington is a small town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,775 at the 2010 census. Lynden is located on the eastern edge of Thurston County and east of Seattle. It is bordered by Wenatchee on the south and north, and Cheney to the east. The first white people to arrive in Lynden were pioneers from what is now Wenatchee who settled in 1847. The name Lynden may have been derived from two other towns in the area - Helmerich and Dutchtown - both of which were named for early settler John Helmerich. In 1853, George Cushman laid out a road from Wenatchee to what is now Lynden as part of his efforts to improve access to land for settlers near Olympia. This development led to increased trade between Lynden and Puget Sound due to the ease of transportation available at that time. In 1909, three men named Harry Kapplin founded a grocery store in what is now downtown Lynden while they were living in Wenatchee under an assumed name borrowed from another store owner there. That same year saw the founding of a high school in Lynden- one of only three such schools established within Thurston County- as well as a post office and church complex soon thereafter. The growth of industry during World War II led to layoffs throughout much of Thurston County; however, local businesses did not fold completely until after hostilities ended in 1945. In 1951 (the same year that Roy Larsen became mayor), plans were developed for developing downtown Lynden into an urban center with shopping malls, office buildings, housing developments and other features typical of suburban areas around then-nascent Seattle metropolitan area. By 1890, when it became an incorporated town, there were over 100 businesses here including a bank, grocery store, lumberyard and post office. In 1916, during World War I, Lynden served as an airfield for military purposes until it was closed down due to enemy action. In recent years, Lynden has seen some growth as it becomes home to many businesses and residents that commute into Wenatchee or Seattle for work or pleasure. In addition to its role as a centennial community celebration and local shopping destination, Lynden offers educational opportunities through local high school and middle schools as well as a variety of cultural attractions such as art galleries and theaters. Lynden holds significant historical significance because it was one of the first places in America where white people met Native Americans - beginning what would be known as The Great American Indian Wars (1890-1914). There are also several memorials located here that commemorate this time period including The Wilkinson Memorial Park which honors General James Wilkinson's battle against Indians at Battle Creek on October 25th 1885; The Indian Head Lighthouse which marks the location where Fort Bridger fell on July 8th 1862; and The John Day Fossil Deposit National Monument which contains evidence linking ancient humans with Lake Chelan dating back 400 million years ago!

Lynden was founded by George Washington in 1792 as a small farming community on the north bank of the Duwamish River. Despite this decline, however, Lynden has continued to maintain a significant presence within local society and culture through various cultural events and initiatives such as its annual Oktoberfest celebration.
