In 1915-16, local officials successfully worked up enough public support to remove several key developers from control of the town's core economy before finally achieving stability during World War I. After the war ended in 1918-19, long view began experiencing rapid economic decline which contributed significantly to social unrest again beginning in 1930-31st century culminating in final social upheaval during 1939-40s known as "The Great Depression."
In 1847, the first white people set foot in what is now Longview, Washington. The town was founded on the ruins of a trading post that had been abandoned by its previous occupants. In 1849, it became the county seat of Butte County. In 1861, when Oregon became a U.S. state, Butte County merged with Douglas County to form King County. On January 1, 1907, King County was divided into two new counties: Kitsap and Thurston counties.
