In 1865, a post office was established at Longview and began serving residents as well as those living nearby on Indian Creek Road. By 1870, there were five stores and three blacksmiths operating in Longview. During this time period, Longview also played host to various events includingwagon races, rodeo exhibitions, fairs and state conventions. One of these events was the 1889 Grays Harbor Convention where delegates from around the Northwest met to discuss issues related to agriculture and forestry. In 1907, construction began on what would become Chinook Dam which would later be named after President Theodore Roosevelt thanks to his efforts in support of dam construction throughout America during his presidency. This event saw heavy industry move into Wenatchee with a consequent increase in traffic on Indian Creek Road which led to increased congestion downtown which caused problems for businesses such as banks and hotels that could not keep up with demand. In 1925, local developer Jens Kopp took control of Chinook Dam site making it available for residential development with plans for thousands of homes along Indian Creek Road leading downriver into Wenatchee Valley; however due to opposition from locals it never came to fruition though Kopp did make some modifications to the plan after its unveiling at a public meeting。 In 1935-1936 another developer named Lewis Barbour bought part of Chinook Dam site resulting in plans for luxury housing developments called “Barbour Heights”; however due againto opposition from locals this project too failed despite being advertised extensively within Wenatchee Valley newspapers (). However much like before there were whispers about new projects being planned for Chinook Dam site long before any decisions were made; eventually becoming known as “The Great Dams Dragonet” (). It wasn't until 1992 when controversy erupted around plans underway by then Mayor Norm Rice for an open-air shopping mall adjacent to Chinook Damsite that finally something came together giving hope for revitalization of nearby Hemlock Stratholme neighborhood . After years of planning & community consultation Rice announced that he had chosen instead an entirely different project - An internet café - amidst much criticism among residents who felt their neighborhoods would have been better served if money had been devoted specifically towards their interests rather than another commercial venture outside their neighborhoods). Today according To Landmark Development Company LLC., Chinook Dam Site remains largely undeveloped & underutilized while Hemlock Stratholme has seen significant redevelopment (including extensive single family home building) since 1992}; making it one of most active areas surrounding WenatcheeValley}.
