Longview is a small town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,886 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Longview were fur trappers and traders from Siberia who traveled through the area in 1805–06. In 1827, James McDougall founded what would become the city of Longview after purchasing land east of present-day Longview from Juan de la Hoz. The town was platted in 1830 and named for President James K. Polk's brother-in-law Colonel David McLaurin (1801–1868), who served as mayor from 1836 to 1840 and again from 1852 to 1860. The city's first store was built on Main Street in 1830 by Wm. Fenton & Co.. The First National Bank building was erected in 1865 by J Ralls & Son, which still stands today as a downtown commercial building that has been used for various purposes including office space, storage, and a nightclub since 1985. Other early businesses include the Everett Turnpike House (now an art museum) and the Packard Hotel/Motel (now home to Roosevelt High School). In 1920s and 1930s Longview experienced some growth due to its location along Interstate 5 during the post World War II boom period; however, with development elsewhere in King County following World War II there then came significant shrinkage of resources within LongVIEW itself starting around 1960 when nearly all manufacturing ceased outside of very limited sectors such as plastics manufacture Today longview enjoys mostly rural character with many properties remaining unincorporated until their incorporation into municipalities such as Sumner or North Sumner townships
