Longview is a census-designated place located in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The community was platted in 1889 as part of a larger land grant to Captain John McLaughlin and his wife Anna by Territorial Governor George Kelso. Captain McLaughlin had arrived in Puget Sound soon after the U.S. purchases of Alaska from Russia on April 12, 1867 and was one of the first white men to ever set foot on what is now Washington state. He named his new settlement "McLaughlin's Landing" in honor of himself and his original homeport in Scotland A post office called Longview was established in 1890, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. Longview has been known as either Alpha or Gamma since its establishment. The name Gamma was chosen because there were two other settlements with this name east of Tacoma – Alpha (now Everett) and Heronville (now Kennewick). In 1907, the Union Pacific Railroad purchased all right-of-way within Thurston County for $1 million dollars which included most of present day Longview including most of its then unincorporated areas today including Delta Junction where Amtrak's "Everett Line" Station currently stands Captain John McLaughlin House still standing on current site; also contains museum artifacts dating back to 1909

Longview is a town in Yakima County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,839 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1853 by Colonel John C. Fremont and his family as the Territorial Capital of Washington Territory and it served as the provisional capital from 1861 to 1866. In 1889, Longview became an incorporated town with a mayor-citizen council system and it retained its territorial status until 1959 when it became a suburb of Seattle. The first permanent settler in what is now Longview was Colonel John C. Fremont who arrived there December 15, 1853 on horseback from Oregon via Mount Vernon Mission Station. He named the locality after himself (long view being one of his many homes). The first post office at Longview was established on February 14, 1854, with JFremont as postmaster; he resigned two weeks later because he did not have enough postage stamps to mail all his letters home! In 1865–1866 Longview served as the provisional capital of Washington Territory due to lack of personnel or financial resources for such an undertaking. At that time local residents met in a meeting held at Fremont's home to discuss their feelings about the situation and eventually decided to return to Seattle as soon as possible due to an increasing cost for living and lack of opportunities for advancement within the new territory. It wasn't until 1889 that Longview officially became an incorporated town - this following an effort spearheaded by Mayor Harry Laughlin which saw longVIEW become one of Seattle's most thriving neighborhoods west of downtown! In 1957 – just four years after becoming a suburb -Longview achieved full cityhood! Today’s population totals over 10,000 people and continues to grow rapidly – evidenced by recent investments into transportation infrastructure such as bike lanes and easy access to jobs across Puget Sound!
On July 4, 1959, the U.S. Highway 7 corridor was widened from its present four-lane width to a six-lane alignment in Longview. The new highway was built parallel to the old Oregon Trail and it helped make the area more accessible for settlers and travelers alike. The new alignment also allowed for expressways that bypassed Longview and other villages along the way.
