Anna May Crabtree homesteaded on the south side of town in 1857 and named it after her mother-in-law's farmstead near Olympia, Washington Territory. On December 6, 1861 a school district was organized which included all of Whatcom County east of Seattle except for part of Tumwater which joined later that year. The name "Longview" was chosen for its longitude - 117 degrees 3 minutes east - along with nearby communities such as Eagle Lake and Arlington Heights to form a new school district headquarters complex that still stands today (the current campus opened in 1970). The original elementary school building burned down on January 8th, 1916 but was replaced by a more recent structure which still serves as the district headquarters today One of the most important events during early Longview history took place when John Wesley Powell became acquainted with the area while working on his exploration trip through central Washington during 1898–99. On July 10th 1899 Powell camped about four miles northeast of present day Longview at Meadow Lakeshis Creek (). During World War II LongVIEW played an important role as an airfields supplying Boeing plants throughout Washington with aircraft parts needed for war production such as engines, wings and other components In 1957 LONGVIEW united with Everett to form one municipality - "Longview"
In 1886, a group of men from Longview, Washington started the first school in that town. The first teacher was Mrs. Lillian Harbaugh and the school continued to be run until 1912. In 1916, the townspeople voted to form their own government and the school was closed down and donated to the county government.
