For many years, Longview served as an important stop on the Oregon and Washington Railway (OW&WR). In 1912, when it became apparent that railroad construction would continue into the future near Tacoma, Washington, Longview decided to move away from its isolation and join the new community of Tacoma. In 1916 John Fenton's grandson Charles Wickersham founded what is now Cascade Natural Resources Company Limited in order to develop coal resources around Loon Lake. After several years of negotiation and opposition by other landowners within Clallam County (the focus of natural resources development at that time), Wickersham secured government assistance through a mineral lease granted to him by Secretary of State Hiram Johnson in late 1922. With this permission and financial support from multiple partners including mining companies Boeing Aircraft Co., Western Pacific Coal Corporation and Northern Mines Inc., Wickersham began large-scale coalmining operations on what is now known as Loon Lake Shale field approximately north-northeast of Longview along Interstate 5 (). By 1930approximately two-thirds of all lignite production associated with Cascade Natural Resources had been mined out (), leaving only hardwood forested land remaining for development (). The company ceased operations due to low prices for coal after World War II ()
