Longview is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. Longview is located on the eastern edge of the Central District of Seattle. It is bordered to the north by Northgate and to the east by Auburn Hills. To its south lies Lake Washington. The first Europeans to visit Longview were fur traders and missionaries in 1805-06. The town site was surveyed in 1837 and named after Colonel George Vancouver's home province of British Columbia, Canada: "Langwidge". At that time it included only a small area near present-day Interstate 5 and Interstate 90. In 1853, when Puget Sound was created as part of local land division between Seattle and King County, Langwidge became part of Seattle proper; however much of what now makes up Longview was still rural until well into the 20th century. In 1907, Everett Waddell bought large tracts from various farmers in central King County for $2 per acre (the equivalent of $ today). He built his house on what is now Maple Street near his farmstead today (which he named Waddell Field). By 1914 Longview had over 2,500 residents; its post office opened that year. Waddell served as mayor from 1915 to 1917 and 1920 to 1923; he also chaired the city council before his death in 1926. During World War II many longshoremen who worked out of Tacoma worked at Lonsdale Army Airfield nearby while they delivered food needed by troops fighting abroad including soldiers who went through Longview on their way back home In 1945 some men working at Lonsdale airstrip saved thousands of gallons (and likely many lives) when an ice storm hit Puget Sound early one morning during wintertime creating dangerous conditions for navigationable waterways Around this time there were also several factories established in or near Longview like Boeing which made Douglas DC-3s during those years but most people know about Lonsdale Army Airfield which played a big role during WWII
