Longview is a city in Clark County, Washington, United States. The population was 12,269 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clark County. Longview has a rich agricultural history and its products include apples, wheat, corn, potatoes and other vegetables. The first settlers in what is now Longview were refugees from the Fraser River valley in British Columbia who arrived around 1872. They named their new town after General John Custer's battle at Little Bighorn during the Mexican–American War. The townsite was established on April 15, 1872 by five men: George Wetherall (from Oregon), Fayette McMillin (from Minnesota), Otho Norris (a Norwegian immigrant from Canada), John Laughlin (a Swede) and James Aitken (an American). In 1908, a post office called "Lake City" was established in long view; it changed to "Longview" in 1913 when one of the postmasters moved there to succeed his predecessor who had died suddenly. In 1916 Longview became part of Multnomah County; according to the 2000 census it had a population of 14,701 residents. On January 1st 1907 Longview became an incorporated village with sevenricts while still under jurisdiction of Multnomah County; its first mayor was Halsey Weller and its first clerk Aiken Jorgensen. On February 17th 1907 it united with present-dayClark County as Long View became an official city with full voting rights within Clark County only four years later on November 6th 1912 following passage of Measure 2 which authorized annexation by Long View into Clark County without any vote or process by either body The population for all incorporated villages totaled 362 on October 3rd 1915 when newly created Snohomish Valley annexed much of southern Clark county including most if not all of what is now LongVIEW City Limits extending along Interstate 5 south to myrtle Beach then eastward to Pullman and northward along I-5 until reaching Lake City which again became an incorporated village before finally joining MultnomahCounty as an unincorporated community on December 1st 1920 .
