Longview, Washington is a small town in the Yakima Valley of south-central Washington. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee–Stevens County School District and its schools are Longview High School and Lower Falls Elementary. The first settler in what is now Longview was Niles H. Emerson, who arrived in 1847. He built a log cabin on an elevation above the present day town site and named it Emersonville after himself. A post office was established at Emersonville in 1850, and by 1855, there were three settlements with namesakes: Fort Lowman (now Longview), Upper Falls, and Stevens Prairie. The first store in Longview opened in 1857 on Main Street across from modern day Lower Falls Elementary School. In 1865, a sawmill was built north of town on Big Creek to produce lumber for local buildings; this mill continued until 1966 when it became part of the Wenatchee Division of Commerce Schools system and ceased operation. The first schoolhouse was erected east of present day Middle Road/Route 99E shortly after Indian Removal began in 1851; this building served as both the primary school for white settlers until 1861 when it burned down and replaced by a larger frame structure which still stands today (the current high school building). A post office called “Lonely Crest” was established at Fort Lowman northeast of town in 1888; this position also served as mail carrier for residents living along Interstate 5 within Wenatchee County until 1952 when that route became state highway 101. By 1895, two churches had been erected: one Congregationalist (later Baptist) – known as First Presbyterian – located on Third Street between Main & Cedar Streets while another Methodist congregation – Second Methodist – located on Fourth Street west of Main & Cedar Streets served as meetinghouses for both denominations until 1925 when they were disbanded because their members moved to Yakima City or elsewhere outside Wenatchee County during that decade due to competition from more organized religious societies within the county growth rate being far outpacing those within Congregationalism/Methodism alone which had declined by 1910%. In 1902–1903 newatography pioneer George Wickersham settled near what is now Longview Lake while working intermittently assigned to US Geological Survey branch headquarters atop Topeka Hill near where his father had operated a coal mine before coming westward into Oregon country some forty years earlier following wagon trains laden with Oregon mealybugs across Wyoming territory entering Kansas River valley via 12 miles long track leading into Wichita Hills area then up Sycamore Canyon floor past several springs arcing over Little Colorado River before reaching Clearwater River about 10 miles upstream from present day junction northwest corner Chehalis Lakes National Monument boundary line Refers back To Pioneer Period

The early settlers had difficulty finding enough water to support their agricultural operation so they built cisterns onsite to draw irrigation water from nearby Lake Washington through natural conduits such as ravines and creeks.
