Longview is a small town in the Yakima Valley of Washington. The population was 2,564 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Sequim-Washougal metropolitan area. The townsite was organized on February 14, 1909 by H.C. Long and Wm. J. Fagan as a result of the creation of Thurston County from what was then King County. At that time, much of what is now Longview was part of land owned by the community's founders and their families - including present-day Elk Grove Village and North Bend - which were adjacent to each other on three sides and had little interaction with either town until after World War II when Everett Air Force Base began operations nearby and residents commuting to work there started moving into Longview proper. The post office at longview first opened in 1912, but it wasn't until 1916 that it became an independent village with its own school board and police department; these days both are still operational although most activities now take place within Alaska Road & High School which serves as the town's only civic center (and also contains its library). In 1951, Griggs Hardware Store moved from neighboring North Bend to become what is now Safeway headquarters; this event helped contribute to Longview's current role as a commuter town for Yakima County residents working in Seattle or Tacoma daytime hours only - most notably via Interstate 5 southbound between those two cities where they can easily park their cars before continuing on foot or bike across propertyowned by Safeway until reaching Interstate 5 northbound at milepost 26 near Mount Rainier National Park; this corridor forms one major route through the heart of downtown Yakima—making it easy for people who want to get around without having too much trouble getting lost (although today I-5 access isn't always unrestricted so bikes are Still needed). Longview is a town in Washington County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,812 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first permanent settlement in what is now Longview was made in 1847 by Captain John Fetterman and his family while they were on their way to lay claim to land west of the Willamette River. They named their new community after Rear Admiral David Sibley's old trading post at Fort Clatsop on the Columbia River. In 1853, federal troops burned down the trading post and all but destroyed the town center before retreating back upriver. The loss of trade must have been a blow to local economy because within five years Longview had built a new trading post at its current location—just east of present-day downtown Longview on State Road 97B (now Interstate 5). Longview experienced some growth during World War II: In 1942 it became one of three towns in Oregon designated for military relocation under General George Custer's orders; other two were Corvallis and La Grande. At that time there was no grocery store or public library in LongVIEW so residents improvised by opening their homes as warehouses or storage units for food and ammunition shipments destined for Japan and Europe. A great many people served in World War II including many who died young - many from cancer resulting from exposure to radon gas found inside munitions factories during wartime production nationwide. After the war ended most residents returned home but caused few changes to their small town lifestyle until well into the 1970s when they began moving out again due to rising costs of living, more open space available, increased traffic congestion outside city limits, and changing demographics which are influenced by technology such as online shopping malls close to major highways

The first post office was established in 1854, and the first school was built in 1855. In 1865, Longview became a townsquare and a stop on the Oregon Central Railroad. In 1870, Longview was platted as a townsite by General Sidney Sherman with land donated from his father-in-law, Salmon P. Chase. In 1872, Longview became the county seat of Lincoln County after becoming part of that county through an act of Congress. The courthouse burned down in 1903 and again in 1912; both times it was rebuilt using local labor. In 1916, LongVIEW incorporated as a city under chapter 7 (the City Charter Revision Act) and adopted its present name (Longview).
