However, LongVIEW remained active until World War I when many new residents were drawn to nearby agricultural lands surrounding Lake Washington for wartime work opportunities. Longview is a city in Washington County, Oregon, United States. The population was 9,746 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Longview County. The name "Longview" comes from a post office on the Pacific Ocean coast of what is now Longview County. The area that would become Longview was first settled by pioneers in 1847 and was named after Captain John Lubbock, who explored the coast of Oregon in 1848. A post office called "Lubbock" was established near present-day Longview on December 12, 1849 by Capt. Ezra Stowell with nine other settlers. In 1861, when Portland became the capital of Oregon, Longview became its second city and appointed Judge Halsey to serve as its first mayor. In 1865, a group of businessmen led by J.D. Porter purchased 4 miles (6 km) south of present-day Longview from Juanita Bogan for $1 per acre (0·30 per sq mi). The town grew rapidly and soon boasted an hospital, schoolhouse, Masonic Lodge No. 2 and blacksmith shop; it also began to sell alcohol for the first time in America! By 1870, over 100 people lived in Short Creek Township; all but two were farmers or ranchers living around Lubbock Lake which served as their water supply and general locale for activities such as fishing and hunting during winter months when there wasn’t enough ice to make boats availableable distant shoreside lakes like Rogue River or Coos Bay The railroad arrived in 1870 too – a local pioneer teamster named George Cook built tracks through Short Creek Township just north of present day LongVIEW while he waited out an FDA inspection stop at his farmstead before continuing his journey eastward across country In 1875 Thomas Edison opened up his new laboratory northeast of downtown Portland on what is now Adams Street/Oregon Avenue NW near where First National Bank now stands Edison had long been dreaming about creating an electric station close to where he lived so this happened without any actual construction taking place until 1886 when company workers started building track bedding along Northeast 10th Avenue between NE Live Oak Street NE Harrison Street & Northwest Apple Street
