In 1941, when Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japan, many residents took up arms against Axis forces within their community because they felt their rights were being violated by Japan's actions During World War II there was heavy damage done throughout downtown businesses including several banks which closed down after being looted by Japanese soldiers while their owners hid under desks or behind boxes until they could be rescued by Allied forces . Many individual homes also sustained extensive damage however most residents managed to rebuild quickly aided by donations from friends and family members . Some notable landmarks that have sprung up around downtown since then are Alaskan Way Park (the original location for CenturyLink Field), Shawarma Palace (a Lebanese restaurant which opened in 1957), Renton Municipal Stadium (nowite home field of Seahawks) and The taproom at Sonic Drive-in . Downtown still has some pre-war architecture such as two 1930s brick buildings used as police headquarters & post office - both remain standing today despite much vandalism over time ..Most notably however recent development has been seen elsewhere within downtown limits with apartment projects replacing commercial buildings formerly located on main streets
