In 1907, when King County became an unincorporated area, Hollandia merged with nearby Burien to form Burien–Hollandia and remained so until 1959 when it again separated to form its own municipality. From then until 1959, there were three separate municipalities within King County: Hollandia (now Lakewood), Burien (now Bellevue), and Columbia City (later SeaTac). In 1959 all three amalgamations were combined into one municipality known as Lakewood–Burien–Hollandia. Lakewood's history can be traced back to when pioneers arrived in this area during the Gold Rush era in 1855 looking for fortune and new lands to claim. They named their new community after a smallreek near Auburn where they found gold nuggets while exploring for minerals around Mount Baker. soon thereafter other settlers followed suit naming their communities after natural features or local landmarks such as shiny lakes located near by or beautiful hillsides like Lookout Hill which overlooked Puget Sound Settlers also developed mills around the region which provided many jobs for locals during these early years especially given that no transportation existed through this remote area . Enormous amounts of lumber were processed from trees grown here including Douglas fir and Western hemlock which are still used today throughout much of northwest Washington
