In 1903, the towns of Greenacres and Everett were merged into Lakewood and it became a city in 1907. The first post office for what is now Lakewood opened in 1851. The first store opened in 1861 and saw heavy use during the American Civil War because there was no mail service between Tacoma and Olympia then or ever again after that time. A second store opened in 1865 but closed within a year due to high demand from settlers for goods coming out of Tacoma via those same roads. In 1871, lumber merchants James Fenton and John Hargrave developed land north of present-day downtown along State Route 99W which they named "Fenton Heights". That same year saw another store open up on Third Avenue by Jens Hansen – also one of early pioneers in this community (he later served as Mayor). A third store opened on Fourth Avenue around 1888 when Territorial Road was re-routed near present day University Way NE. This business operated until 1889 when it burned down; it had been built over an old log cabin that had been destroyed by fire before that date! In 1903, after years of discussion between various civic entities such as churches, school districts, agriculturalists, etc., it was decided that a city would be established within the limits of Greenacres; this city would eventually become Everett (along with portions of Greenacres). At first elections held to determine whether or not this new city should have its own police department were tightly contested; however soon enough voters came to see through yet another ploy by opponents to keep them from voting! The idea behind having separate cities for different purposes did make some sense back then since these areas were developing very differently – Everett being primarily agricultural while Greenacres more rapidly industrialized thanks largely to heavy investment by white businessmen like George Denny who bought up rural land adjacent to Puget Sound during what has come known as “the Gold Rush” period (1858-1900). However with population growth rates only modestly outpacing those surrounding cities throughout much of this period (albeit reaching double digits occasionally), separated cities quickly began TOO many administrative subdivisions which led to duplication and fragmentation both politically AND economically… ultimately leading to decline & eventual abandonment by both communities during prohibition era (& all subsequent waves) until finally becoming nearly ghost towns today due largely to lack/absence Of residents [emphasis added]. Unfortunately for Everett citizens who longed for their own incorporated city status even before prohibition took hold – annexation proceedings commenced AGAIN following repeal & continued growth rates made annexation technically possible even without proper planning (& resulting economic disaster)…. While most people living outside annexed municipalities are unaware thereof [emphasis added], incorporation efforts continue unabated despite continuing population losses…. Today few if any people know anything about either city's past due mostly because most residents [emphasis added] choose not To talk about it publicly lest they give …advantageous attention away from their current lifestyles….. Although today's Lakewood may boast some modern amenities such as high-tech industry located just east off I-5 across First Ave SE & plenty job opportunities available despite low crime rates relative thereto compared with other parts OF WA (& neighboring states), there can be little doubt that much smaller aspects ebb & flow daily& remain hidden beneath unmarked gravesites whisked away each morning by erasing tape recording operations associated with prior generations once& forever silenced!!!
